  1. A small bulb that develops above ground from
  2. a bud. Bulbils may be formed on the stem from
  3. axillary buds, as in Saxifraga hypnoides, or
  4. in the place of flowers, as seen in many
  5. species of onion (Allium). They drop off the
  6. parent plant and develop into new
  7. individuals, providing a means of vegetative
  8. reproduction and dispersal.
